Nilgiris Wynaad Tribal Welfare Society

Relentlessly working with the Hill Tribes of
the Nilgiri Wynaad Region.

Our Story

Nilgiris Wynaad Tribal Welfare Society is an NGO set up in 1978 to provide free medical and other care to the Hill Tribe inhabitants living in the Nilgiri and Wynaad districts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala In South India. It is situated at Ambalamoola between Gudalur and Sultan Battery, approximately equidistant from Ootacamund, Mysore and Calicut in an originally subtropical rainforest area of the Western Ghats.

It is funded partly from its own 17-acre farm, Government grants, donor agencies and private donations.

Working In One Of India's Most Dynamic Landscapes

Founded in 1978 in the quaint and charming region of the Nilgiris adjourning the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, the NWTWS is a non-profit organization set up to facilitate healthcare and education among the indigenous members of the area.

With steady conviction, the unflinching support of our stakeholders and the warm and loving help from the community, we strive to achieve our goal of bettering the lives of all indigenous tribes here.

The History Of NWTWS

NWTWS has been working in the Nilgiris Wynaad since 1978. Our project was originally designed to address health issues and later began to tackle various other problems facing the Tribal community in ways appropriate to their needs, priorities and cultures.

John Anthony Wilson

Born in 1949 in Huddersfield as the youngest of four children, John Anthony Wilson was brought up as a Quaker. He attended a Quaker boarding school, then qualified as a nurse in Huddersfield and studied psychiatric training at the Quaker Retreat in York. According to his mother’s autobiography, a friend predicted authoritatively that John would go to help a Hindu doctor in the Nilgiri Hills in Southern India. Little did he know that two years later, he would step into India!
